Level 1 Lesson 1 – Say Hello in Tagalog

Kumusta? That’s the Tagalog word for hello or hi.

Welcome to our very first lesson. Starting here you will learn the usual words used in everyday conversations in Tagalog. The first word that you will learn is how to say hello.

Kumusta? = Hello/How are you?

Filipinos greet each other in English so “hello” is usually used first before “kumusta?”

Example:
Hello, kumusta?
(Hello, how are you?)

In this, it means “what’s up?” or “how have you been?” if you’re talking to someone younger than you or to your peers. But if you’re talking to older people you will use “kumusta po?” to show respect.

The additional word “po” will be discussed in future lessons.

“Kumusta?” can also be spelled as “kamusta?” but this is rarely used in everyday conversation.

So that ends it, I hope you learned and enjoyed our first lesson and we hope that you will read more of our lessons. We’ll keep posting new lessons so please anticipate it. If you have any questions, just post a comment and we’ll answer it.

Now say hello to Tagalog!
